Neuro Linguistic Programming, NLP, is a fairly recent development, originating at
the University of Santa Cruz in the mid-seventies.
Unlike other change systems which concentrates on recovering a lost standard, NLP
aims to move beyond that remedial change model to ‘generative’ change, which sets
and achieves new, higher and more empowering standards for the individual or group.
The co-founders of Neuro Linguistic Programming, Richard Bandler and John Grinder,
studied excellence, by closely observing some individuals who do what they do excellently
and modelling their behaviours beliefs and attitudes. The common factors were extracted
and developed into a model of human excellence. The model identified some useful
ideas (called presuppositions) which include:
- Mind and body are part of the same system
- Each person is unique and uniquely valuable
- I am in charge of my mind, and therefore my results
- Everyone has all the resources they need for success - there are no unresourceful
people, only unresourceful states
- Everyone makes the best choice available to them at the time
- Behind every behaviour is a positive intention
- A person ‘s behaviour is not the person
- There is no failure, only feedback
- The meaning of a communication is the response you get
- Experience has a structure; change the structure and you change the experience
- All experiences are subjective. We respond to our internal representation of events,
not to the events themselves
NLP examines how we use our brain (Neuro) and language (Linguistics) in coding and
storing (Programming) our experiences, thus adding to our knowledge of how to use
our brains more effectively. This offers a powerful, creative and generative way
of promoting change and growth in how we communicate with others and ourselves. Some
standard generative change patterns have been identified but more continue to develop
apace in response to new challenges in therapy, education and business.
Something that often surprises people about NLP is the speed with which many problems
can be resolved. My experience as a therapist and trainer has taught me that solving
one’s problems is all about learning at the unconscious level, which is where it
counts and learning can happen very quickly.
